Situated in the Saguenay Region of northeastern Quebec, Dolbeau-Mistassini is an important commercial hub for the entire Lac St-Jean area, which draws visitors for its majestic wilderness and all-season recreational opportunities. Located 311 km (193 mi) north of Quebec City and 127 km (79 mi) east of Chicoutimi, the amalgamated town was originally settled by the French during the 17th century as three separate colonies, each tied closely by a shared culture, religion and burgeoning economies in forestry and agriculture.

Currently, the area holds ground as a vibrant summer resort destination, replete with activities along the famed Mistassibi and Mistassini rivers and its primary attraction, the expansive Lac St-Jean. White-water rafting, lake boating, salmon fishing, golfing and hunting attract visitors during the finer weather months while downhill skiing at Do-Mi Ski Centre is a big draw during winter. Bike touring enthusiasts will appreciate the ideal riding conditions available along the Veloroute des Bleuets, a 256-km (159-mi) paved route which encircles the lake and passes through numerous communities and attractions. The self-described blueberry capital of the world, the town celebrates its connection to the fruitful crop every August during its Festival du Bleuet, which offers ample opportunities for tastings and festivities for the entire family. Western sporting traditions come alive during the annual Festival Western Extreme Dolbeau-Mistassini, which delights visitors with rodeos, country dances, poker tournaments and concerts.
